20 miles with Ellen

I took Ellen out for her longest ride yet. 20 miles. We headed up Mowry to Mission Boulevard and went south. We took Mission Boulevard all the way down to Stanford Avenue. Stanford is the road you take to get to the staging area to hike Mission Peak. There were definitely some hills to climb. On one hill I was going down, I was travelling at 28.6 mph. Tells you how steep it was. I was going like 6.2 mph on the way back up it. The last hill that goes into the parking lot for Mission Peak is steep. My first attempt, I had to turn around. I went down the road a little ways and drank some water, ate some Gu Chomps and told myself I could probably make it up there without a problem, if I tried again. I did! No big deal. I *heart* Ellen. Here's some pictures I took along the way.

Trees, looking like Fall, along Mission Boulevard:

Historic Mission San Jose :: Fremont, California :: Established 1797:

My dear friend, Mission Peak:

I stopped at my favorite produce stand:

Admired the beautiful flowers they are growing:

And bought some energy for the remainder of my ride home:

I'm not CRAZY about riding on a main boulevard with stop lights and trucks flying by at 45 mph but I do like that Mission is a steady but gradual climb. I already know I get bored with a flat out-and-back like the Alameda Creek Trail. Seeing the foothills during the entire ride was nice. I'll probably continue to use Mission Boulevard, it's the best option in Fremont.
I'm still learning how to use my gears properly. I know it sounds like simple science but there is a lot to consider when climbing, going flat and going down hills. And then stopping at lights and starting again. I'll get the hang of it. I just have to keep trying.
I went back to Pilates for the first time since Jamaica. Our instructor, Karen, went to a two week training class while I was gone and she came back with some different moves, I tell ya. My entire torso is SORE today. More so than the very first time I did Pilates. I can't cough, I can't sneeze. Too bad I'm working all day tomorrow, or I'd go back for more. ;)
Until later.............

Excellent JoLynn...another good route in Fremont is Paseo Padre (bike lanes), ~20M loop if you take Mission S to Paseo Padre (just past Mission Peak), then Paseo N all the way to Decoto, then Decoto E back to Mission, and Mission S to start/finish.

Hope to see you Saturday, still not 100% sure I make start line.

Cheers, Will G.

Looks like a fun ride to me - wish I could join ya;) So glad that the knee didn't take you down and out...it just made ya different. Think of all the stuff you wouldn't have done (maybe) if that hadn't happened???

You know you have arrived when you can fly down the hill at 30 with hands off the handle bars drinking water and eating a power bar....:)

practice makes perfect...that's the way to learn how to use the gearing!

Nice! Going up steep hills on a trafficky road and being clipped in scares the heck out of me.

Looks like a great bike trip!

I second the Paseo Padre/Mission loop recommendation. You an also ride south on the creek trail to Coyote Hills to get some hills in. And there's always Morrison Canyon Rd... ;)

You can avoid the traffic on Mill Creek Road! My favorite route is Palomares Canyon

Chris has been riding up Mt. Diablo... (yikes!) if you ever want to do some hills I am sure he would show you the way :)

That look suits you well. Peaches are my favorite fruit after a good run.

Oh, by the way, I signed up for Rodeo Beach, Dec 19th. The 30K! Are you doing this one?

What a wonderful ride! It doesn't take a bit to get used to all the gears and when to shift when going up hill, etc. Starting and stopping, clipping in and out...I am still working on getting it all coordinated.
Wish I could join you on a California ride!
The leaves are turning here too.

Your next goal is to climb Mt. Hamilton (or Diablo) :). The views from both are so uplifting. You can hit 40 mph easy decending these climbs (actually, 40 mph is not considered that fast to a seasoned cyclist...60 mph is). I have ridden hills that I routinely hit 50 on!
Wish I could have made it to Skyline! We may do the Santa Monica event linked to a San Diego visit...and still considering one of the Marin Headlands events Nov/Dec if I can arrange a Bay Area visit.
Have fun on Ellen, Ann

Great photos, Auntumn is indeed just round the corner!

One tip I was told a long time ago is to always stop in the gear you want to start in

Yeah...I'm still baffled by the gear-shifting thing too. I always feel like I'm in the wrong gear at the wrong time.

Once again. Love the photos. You look awesome.
