Numbers for the week

My week went pretty well. When I looked at my totals, I was surprised to see I had swam four days. I forgot about Sunday morning. Totals for the week:

4 days swimming (1800 yds, 2100 yds, 1725 yds, 1750 yds)
3 days hiking (3.5 miles, 8.75 miles and very short today)
2 days Pilates

I find it difficult to GET TO the pool. I'm never really excited about getting my stuff together and driving to the pool. I don't know why but I just don't like it. Once I'm in and I start, it's okay. Laps 30-52 are my least favorite. After 52, getting to 72 is a breeze. Today I did all freestyle. Come to find out, breast stroke hurts my knee. Yup. I bought ear plugs earlier in the week. My right ear kept filling up with water and it would bother me for the rest of the day, to the point of giving me a headache. A plug in that ear seemed to fix the problem. I'm practicing breathing on each side, instead of just one. I feel completely off balance when I do it, but I think it's getting better. I'm still not incorporating the flip turns. I know how to do them but I'm just afraid to. I have no clue why. Next week, I'm going to increase my distance a little bit and maybe try a flip turn. I'm not making any promises.

My body feels "longer". Even though it's only been two weeks of the swimming and Pilates, my clothes are slipping right up to my waist when I put them on. That's encouraging. It's just enough to keep me motivated.

I haven't had a donut in three weeks. That just popped in my head so I thought I would document it. :)

After swimming this morning I came home and ate. By the time I was done and ready to go for a hike, it was 11:00. My daughter was over and we were chatting. Anyway, I took Boomer and Bella to Garin. It was already 76 degrees. It's really dry at Garin right now.

I was just planning on doing about three miles, in the shadiest part of the park. We were only 15-20 minutes in when Boomer decided he wasn't that interested in leaving the shade he was in. I coaxed him a bit further but all he did was run up to a different shaded area.

I finally turned around and we headed back to the car. He stopped in every shady spot he could find. I didn't really find it unbearable but for some reason, he did. No big deal.

I'm off to get ready for work at 3:00. Tomorrow I will be volunteering at Headlands Hundred, a PCTR event. My assignment is from 6:00 to 11:00 a.m. The race ends at 4:00. I would like to get a nice hike/run in over there after I'm done working and maybe get to see some people cross the finish line after completing 100 miles. I've never witnessed that before. I bet it would be inspiring, to say the least. I will be sure to get lots of beautiful pictures (weather permitting).
Until later...,,..........

You're turning into quite the swimmer!

My puppy has been doing the same shade hopping all week - a nice cool, 80 degree day would be nice!

Can't wait to hear all about the 100 miler too.

look for catra tomorrow!

as far as the swimming. you want to breathe both sides, practice that. i had to learn that last fall. flips turns - not necessary. unless you feel like it. and do some swim sets to break it up! 500's, 200's, 100's, 50's, i'll give you a swim w/o to keep you from being bored and your arms will feel like falling off afterwards! :)

It's always a bonus when the clothes just slip on!

Enjoy volunteering at the event!

Way to go, but I totally understand about "getting" to the pool. Don't laugh, swimming really helps relieve the compression in your spine.

I can hardly wait to hear all about the H.H. have fun.

Woohoo for pants slipping right on! Sounds like you're finding some of your NEW groove. That's great. I swim and race with ear plugs - can't stand the water in my ear and subsequent ear infection!

Great job with the workouts, no donuts for 3 wks, and breathing on both sides. Aim for balance and symmetry when possible.....so, if breaststroke hurts the knee (not that surprising) put in some backstroke to "balance" the free and to prevent overuse injuries as mentioned to you previously--just putting in a couple of laps of back after every 10-20 laps of free will work wonders. Hope you get some good pics of the brave souls doing the HH! Ann

Nice week, and awesome job on the swimming and pilates! Getting ready for the pool and driving there is the tough part, you're right... especially during the winter months when it's cold, and dark at 5:30pm. I have no motivation to get to the pool for 9-10pm swim, to come out in the freezing cold temps and snow :( Now that i'm more into the tri stuff though, I'll be interested to see if this changes. :) Hope you had a great day at the ultra!!

Looks like it was a great week. The way you feel about driving to the pool is how I feel about driving to the gym. It seems like a chore getting there but once I'm there I am so glad I made the effort.

I forgot your exact location, your trails are always so beautiful. Then I clicked over to your profile - San Fran. What a great area you live in!!
